چکیده

The resonant-mass technique for the detection of Gravitational Waves may involve, in the near future, the cooling of very large masses (about 100 tons) from room temperature (300K) to extreme cryogenic temperatures (20mK). To cool these detectors down to cryogenic temperatures an exchange gas (helium) is used, and the heat is removed from the antenna to the cold reservoir by thermal conduction and natural convection. With the current technique, cooling times of about one month can be obtained for cylindrical bar antennas of 2.5 tons. Should this same technique be used to cool a 100-ton spherical antenna the cooling time would be about 10 months, making the operation of these antennas impracticable. In this work we study the above-mentioned cooling technique and others, like thermal switching and forced convection from room temperature down to liquid nitrogen temperature (77K) using an aluminum, 19kg-25cm-diameter, truncated icosahedron.

I give a brief introduction on gravitational wave laser interferometers, possible detectable sources from the ground and noise in the detectors. Gravitational wave research started in the early 1960's thanks to the pioneering work of Weber 1. Since that time, there has been an ongoing research effort to develop detectors of sufficient sensitivity to allow the detection of waves from astrophysic...

Gravitational-wave Antennas for the next Generation

The sensitivity of resonant-mass gravitational-wave antennas has now reached h ≤ 10−18, where h is the dimensionless metric perturbation caused by the wave. In order to observe gravitational wave events such as coalescing neutron star binaries and colliding black holes from as far as the Virgo cluster of galaxies, the detector sensitivity must be improved by three orders of magnitude. With such...

Cylindrical versus Spherical Resonant Antennas for Gravitational Wave Detection

The principles and detection of gravitational waves by resonant antennas are briefly discussed. But the main purpose of this short note is to compare the two geometries of resonant antennas, the well-known cylindrical to the spherical type. Some features of a two sphere observatory are also discussed. [email protected] 1

Design and Efficient Analysis of Large Reflectarray Antenna

In recent years reflectarray antennas have received considerable attention due to their unique capabilities. However, due to their large size, analyzing the performance of these antennas using traditional full wave finite-difference and finite-element techniques requires considerable computational resources. In this paper, we present an efficient method to accurately analyze these class of ante...
